10 ways to Save Money on Gas

With gas prices over $4 a gallon in some parts of the country, people everywhere are trying to save and conserve gas in their vehicles. We have all heard of “tips” for reducing gas consumption but we often find ourselves asking if they really work. Here are a few things that you can do that WILL save you money at the pump.

The first tip is really the most obvious. If you don’t have to drive then don’t. Believe it our not those boots were made for walking. So if you can, walk or ride a bike to your destination. If that is not possible, try to consolidate your trips. Pick one day a week to do all your errands and stick with it. If you forgot something at the store, improvise with something else. You will not believe how much gas is wasted going on short trips.

Next get a new air filter. I know every time you get your oil changed they let your know how dirty it is. Yet you keep putting off. Just suck it up and purchase one. The next time you are near an automotive pick one up. They are easy to change yourself and usually aren’t more than $10-$15. And an air filter will significantly increase you fuel efficiency.

If you live in a city with a decent mass transit or bus system, use it. Mass transit and bus passes are much less expensive than gasoline and are a reliable form of transportation.

Start a carpool. These are not only great for your kids going to and from school but they are also perfect for you going to and from work. It is such a waste to only drive yourself to the office when you can at least be splitting the cost of fuel with someone else.

Slow down. You will get much more out of each gallon of gas by going 35 mph rather than 50mph.

If you have some extra money lying around and are in the market for a new car, consider purchasing a hybrid. These vehicles get fantastic gas mileage and are just as affordable as their gas guzzling cousins. They even make hybrid in SUV so you don’t have to sacrifice any room.

While times are hard for everyone with a car, there are things we can do to stretch that gas dollar. By making a few small, easy changes in your life, you can ease the impact of gas prices on your family budget.
